Unltd
Marc influenced my self in a way that forged me forever.
It all started with the coolest t-shirts I ever saw in my life. At the time, buying a t-shirt wasn’t something that I did every weekend. Getting a pair of t-shirts was pretty much a special occasion. Every single time that happened, I faced one of the toughest decisions in my life: Quantity vs Quality. I mean it was all down to buying a few shirts that didn’t mean a thing or buying just one or two shirts - that for whatever reason - represented my whole world.
I loved drawing. I wasn’t as good as I would have liked to be, but I just enjoyed it. Whenever I really liked a doodle I used to covered it in tape and sticked it onto my pencil box. Heck yeah, that pencil box didn’t just carried my pencils, it was my pride. In a way, that carried on into my family’s computer, in which I used to make up my own things using the fanciest tool of all: Microsoft Paint.
So, when I crossed paths with t-shirts that had a rhino and crazy cool designs, it was natural that Ecko UNLTD would quickly become my favorite brand of all.
At the time I assumed that all brands were very well-oiled machines without a soul and wearing a brand in specific didn’t meant a thing to me. Without knowing the history behind the brand, Graffiti and Music were topics that were awaking my interest. Ironically, Hip Hop wasn’t even a thing in my hometown, but some way it got me hooked.
I didn’t know that there was a whole culture behind Hip Hop, to which I fell in love with later on. Hip Hop was all about expressing yourself, using spray paint, music, break dance and even beatbox. Hip Hop to me was all about art and expression and suddenly the more I got into hip hop the more I saw the rhino that already represented my world.
What were the odds? What were the odds that some t-shirts were the connecting dots between everything I loved at the time? Probably very good marketing; however, the Ecko Unltd brand wasn’t sold officially in Mexico. I started digging around to find out more about the clothing brand. And found out its history: the worldwide iconic brand (if you were into the Hip Hop scene) started out by a dude spraying t-shirts and taggin’ walls in NYC. The dude’s name: Marc Ecko.
The more I learned about Marc, the more I was impressed. I just admired that even at his position, he was unique. He was always an artist before a business mogul. That, really made a life-lasting impression on me. He was to me the living proof that dreams become true. He was the living proof that you can sell your art without selling your soul.
Marc totally inspired me to go after my dreams and never, ever, fall into stereotypes. He also taught me that you can be whatever you want to be in life. He inspired me to start small, but shoot to the moon. To be creative. To be unique. To be unlimited.
