Project 3 Prelim

Post by Cedar »

Hey Everyone,
Here is my Project 03 prelim. The event I chose is the Alpine Cup. This is a ski competition held at Alpine Ski Resort, and I chose it because I used to coach the kids who compete and am very familiar with the event. For my designs I really wanted to show case the beauty of the mountain as I felt this would help draw people to the site and keep them there. I also wanted to use a lot of blue and white to give the impression of snow and winter. Let me know what you think!

Hi! I absolutely the layouts with the orange sunset in the background! This usage of warm tones gives a great contrast to the blues you are using. Im excited to see how this finished sit turns out in the end, good luck!

Cedar, I love the action skiing! I am not a fan of the crown atop the mountain. The C in the logo looks like an L.. I don't think I would put the logo in front of items, but on the clear solid sky it seems okay. I really like the gold design and if you do that, the text ontop of the gold sunset could be a slightly transparent text box background with warm lettering. This is looking good and I wonder if you are going to give the style sheets and thumbnails later?

Hey Cedar,
I think its very cool to use an event that you are already familiar with--it will definitely make your final version of your website all the more insightful coming from someone that has connections to it! I already mentioned this on another classmate's prelim, but it would really be a neat feature to include an extra page dedicated to people's past experiences with the competition; where you could even include yours as well and some information about that training program potential visitors of the site might be interested to learning more about.

For the pros on your concepts, I really like how each one is laid out. I can already envision how well it will condense down when the browser window is squeezed for mobile viewing, which you have already achieved in project 02, so A+ there! I also enjoy the ice-y color schemes that you had gone with, it really pairs well with that orange sunset background on the "About" page in the first concept. But what I would suggest is just tossing in 1 or 2 more contrasting colors to highlight key parts and make them stand out, since everything is currently relying on those analogous blue hues, you know? I also really like how the logo in the second concept looks compared to the first, its very creative and immediately sells home what the website is all about to the audience. (Maybe applying a white glow behind the black ring in the logo will make it pop all the more against the background image too! P.s. really love the little man doing a flip in the logo as well :D )

I think that's really all I have left to say since I already like how these two concepts turned out, so I am excited to see which one you will go with for the final. Maybe another small thing I might add is just the font choices for the headlines--I think you can go bolder/use more extreme ones to match up with the intensity of this competition. But besides all that, I really do enjoy the effort and energy that I am seeing with these designs, great work! :)

Hi!!

SORRY FIRST HEY I'M A COACH AT PALISADES THATS SO SICK!!! (I should have done a alpine or pt event that's such a good idea man) but I absolutely adore this! maybe for the version 2 with the sunset use some orange as an accent? I think there needs to be a complimentary color in there just to make things pop!

Fellow coach,

Hi Cedar, I love the layout with the sunset the most, especially since it's a nice color contrast to the blue. I'd love to see an animated background of the skier to draw people to the website. :D I also like the Alpine Cup font. If your nav fonts could match similar vibes to feel chilly, I think it would be a great addition to keep the cool theme. Overall, great work!

Hi Cedar.
First off, fantastic logo! I agree with the other comments that the sunset one is the strongest and that adding a secondary color would add more to your site. I also think you should use a "cooler" font for your headlines. As it stands right now, the serif font for "About the Alpine Cup" isn't really screaming "cool snowboard/ski event". I think the other font in your first design is really hitting that mark. Maybe just switching that up can make it stand out even more.
