Quinn, I prefer the 2nd version. You may need to have a smaller font on your nav, and allow some space between each nav link. I am sure you would account for readability when placing text over images. The images you chose on 2nd make me want to quit critiquing and go watch his comedy, but I must contain myself. I do not get the reason to use a black background on your nav bar, and feel you could allow more of your real estate given to nav bar to go elsewhere to the content.
If we feel useful in life and loved, it sure makes life significant and wonderful
